About me

and my love for crafting

As far back as I can remember, I loved arts and crafts. My mom passed on her creative spirit on to me. I wasn’t great at sewing but watching her knit and crochet was fascinating.

When we were very young, she had kept my sisters and I busy rolling yarn balls for her. I never forgot how to do that and I still do that today.

She first taught me the basics of crochet and had me practice on very thin crochet thread because she made doilies as did all women of her generation. Later as a young adult I made bikini tops, beanies, and purses of all shapes and sizes. She always told me it was relaxing and kept her hands busy. She also told me it helped with arthritis in old age.

In early 1971 I traveled overseas all the way to Israel where a part was waiting for me in the movie, Jesus Christ Superstar. I never made it in time for that role in the movie because I was stranded in Athens as the Tel a Viv airport was on strike.

Since that time I was lucky enough to work in a Kibbutz for 2 months in Israel, but from there Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia ending up spending a year in Australia. We only passed through New Zealand in the dead of winter so we hitched a ride to the airport ending up in Fiji on our way back home to Hawaii. After arriving home to Oahu, city life just didn’t feel good so I moved to Kauai.

One thing about crochet or knitting, you can easily work your craft on the road.

I didn’t start knitting until all four of my children had chickenpox all at the same time. During that time, I remembered a little of what my mom taught me and learned more from books from the library. We didn’t have a great TV in those days and the kids mostly just slept, all of us together, cozy in one big bed in our living room nestled in our valley house in the trees.

Which now brings me to why I’ve decided to get back to knitting those iPhone Bags I started in the 1980’s.

The quarantine in 2020 has given me a great opportunity to focus back on that creative energy that gave me such joy in my youth.

These Kauai Phone Bags are truly handmade and may well be limited editions as I can only make few each day 😂
